Brief Notes on the Upcoming Championship

Florida will win the National Championship against Ohio State tonight in the second consecutive men's major NCAA sport, giving the Gators two titles in the same sport in the same calendar year.

Not a bad accomplishment, but the one question lingering is the status of head basketball coach Billy Donovan.

Will he stay? Will he go? Would he leave for bluer pastures or for the blue waters of Miami?

One thing is for certain, and it's the fact Donovan would be crazy to leave his current situation.

I love how every commentator from ESPN News to ESPN radio and all points in between asks what more Donovan can do at the University of Florida.

How about going for a three-peat, something only John Wooden knows about? How about putting Florida on the same historical level of the UCLAs, Kentuckys and North Carolinas?

One thing making Donovan such a high commodity is his ability to not let this situation affect his team negatively or interrupt the task at hand - which is winning the title again.

The players made a bold and inspirational move by coming back for another season, and their efforts have so far been rewarded. One more win would make it worthwhile for them.

Donovan did one thing many coaches could learn from when asked about all the surrounding speculation. He told the truth. He didn't beat around the bush when talking to ESPNs Andy Katz, and it's one of the reasons the man is one of the most respected in his profession.

Not to belittle Ohio State coach Thad Motta and his team's accomplishments, but these Gators have too big of a bite and will be too hard to stop. Let's hope the game will at least be closer than a year ago or at least more competitive than its football version wound up.
