NBA GIVES KOBE CAREER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD, ALSO KNOWN AS THE 2008 MVP 2008-05-06 22:32:57 | By: Ahmed Javaid The discrepancy here is that Kobe DID deserve the MVP in previous years and somehow fell short. But those mistakes by the league are just that, they are mistakes. It is not something that can be made up for by giving away the most coveted personal award in the sport. This year Kobe had a tremendous season and another all star caliber year that deserves plenty of MVP nominations. But he is not the 2008 NBA MVP. The problem with Kobe getting the award has nothing to do with what his team has done this year. It has nothing to do with Kobe playing great basketball and having amazing chemistry with Gasol, Odom, and the rest of the Lakers. The reason Kobe is not the MVP is because of another guard out West. He wears number 3 on his jersey also known as CP3. Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets is the game’s MVP. New Orleans? A Basketball powerhouse? Who knew? Chris Paul has taken a team that on paper does not even seem like playoff material and put them right near the top of the most competitive conference in all of sports. He does not have the experience that Kobe has under his belt but yet somehow but up 21 points per game to go with nearly 12 assists, almost 3 steals, and 4 rebounds per night. To top it off Paul plays the point guard position and runs the team in a way that gets everyone involved and at the same time allows him to make big time plays in clutch spots. People have compared Paul to Isiah Thomas but that comparison should really not be made. Paul is in his own category as he creates his own legacy. In his last game of the series against the Dallas Mavericks he was matched up with a premier guard who is renown for his triple doubles. But Jason Kidd was not in the limelight. Paul’s line in the game is what a perfect game is all about. He finished with 24 points, 15 assists, 11 rebounds, 2 steals, to go along with a staggering ZERO turnovers. If the Hornets had been playing against a Bulls team with Pippen, Rodman, and Jordan they would not have lost with their floor general putting on that kind of a show. Sure many fans are content with seeing Kobe finally getting what he could have easily won in past years. It seems like nice story for everyone as the Lakers are once against contending for the title. But the reality is that the Hornets, the same team that had speculation going on about relocation due to attendance now has a 2-0 lead on the defending champions, the San Antonio Spurs and are showing that they are the real deal. Next time you watch the Hornets play keep your on eye on Paul. Not only will you be amazed by the style of play but more importantly look at the bigger picture. Where has the team come from? To climb the ladder from push over to powerhouse in not easy. The litmus test for this argument is starting to grow its roots. There is a good chance that the Lakers and Hornets face off in the Western Conference Finals. The victor would be able to prove who deserved the prized possession more. Then again, if you would ask these two elite athletes they could careless. They eye the bigger prize. What they really want is to be the last ones standing. And everyone else has fallen. For us, however, the path to glory should be a very exciting and one the NBA playoffs has been lacking, but its back…………..with a vengeance. Comments
