NHL Update

Seeing the Red Wings lose 6 straight games helps all hockey fans, besides Detroit of course, feel at ease. While it is strange to see the Red Wings lose even one game, six in a row reminds us that they aren't supernatural beings, after all.

When you look at the standings, you see that the top teams in the West have more points than the top teams in the East. I always wondered if that meant that the West was better or if the East is just more competitive. But if you add up all the points from each team in both conferences, here are your results:

1009- Total points from all teams in the Western Conference

970- Total points from all teams in the Eastern Conference

The West has 39 more points than the East, which makes it fair to say the West may be a bit better. But, if you believe that the All Star Game means anything, the East did win the game and the Skills Competition... Look at the NHL.

Hands down, points-wise, at this point in the season, Detroit and Dallas are doing the best. Ottawa, the best in the East is down 6 points of the West's 2nd place Stars. West looks to be a tad bit better... If we exclude the Kings... Hehe.

Kings are surprisingly; still bad. They have some good scorers, Kopitar, Frolov and Cammalleri. They have 176 goals scored, 3rd in the West! Yet, they've given up 201 goals, the most in the NHL and so they are in last place in the league. Same with Tampa Bay, who no one expected to be at the bottom. But their D and goaltending just isn't good enough.

I'm sure all hockey fans are baffled by the Rangers. At the beginning of the season, I expected them to go undefeated. : ) Looks like they'll be OK, though.

If you read my article, Keep an Eye on the Blues, I expected them to make the playoffs. They're not in right now, but they need Legace to stay healthy, and hopefully it will happen.

The Southeast Division has us all baffled. If someone told you Carolina was in first place, you'd think," Cool, they're doing pretty good." Not really. Carolina's 30-27-4. If you count the OT losses, they've lost more games than they've won. Yet, they're in first. If Tampa Bay were to win they're next 2 games, they'd go from last to tied for 2nd in the division. It's a tight, and not-so-good division.

Also like to add, it's good to see that Richard Zednik is doing good. Best wishes. And it was good to see how much the NHL community and fans cared.

Nabokov has played in all but one of the Sharks games, and he's recieved all 31 wins for them. Pretty cool.

There's your NHL update.... -Neeks
