Wacky College Football Saturday 2007-10-01 14:21:54 | By: Tyler Clifton
So many adjectives could be used to describe a day in
which more ranked teams were upset than any other
since 1993.
It all started Friday night (a terrible night to have a college game since those such as myself are out covering a high school game). West Virginia didn't make it out alive against South Florida in an upset of smaller proportions, as any win for the Bulls at this point can't really be considered an upset. What began as a monumental win turned not-so-good win against Auburn is now a good win again after the Tigers victory over Florida. The Tigers are the last team to beat the defending national champion Gators — twice. It saved what was a season heading into a downward spiral. Georgia Tech put a stinger into Clemson in what turned out to be a special day for the Atlantic Coast Conference. Maryland made up for its overtime choke job against Wake Forest last week with a solid win against Rutgers. Florida State closed things off with its win against Alabama in what was a sloppy game on both sides to say the least. Losses by Rutgers and West Virginia lost some credibility for the Big East, but there is still plenty of time to rebound. Kansas State did what it couldn't do in its season opener at Auburn by securing a big win and did so at Texas' expense. The Wildcats not only beat the Longhorns, they annihilated them and rubbed it in their face with punt and kickoff returns for touchdowns. Arguably the biggest upset of the day was Colorado's 20-point comeback win at home over Oklahoma. The annual Red River Rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma lost some of its luster but not much for anyone who knows how big this game is for both teams. The one interesting tidbit this year is the fact one of them will be 0-2 in conference play and can kiss goodbye any chance of capturing a division title, championship game berth and possible conference title and the big bowl game that follows. There were also the near misses (Michigan State-Wisconsin, USC-Washington and Cal-Oregon). The Spartans will still be heard from in the Big 10 as will the Huskies and Ducks in the PAC 10. What makes things even more interesting is the fact that there are at least five future matchups possibly pitting undefeated teams, forcing at least one of them to lose. Two of the three between USC, Cal and Arizona State must lose as well as one of the two between Cincinnati and South Florida, Kentucky and LSU and Wisconsin and Ohio State. Let the fun continue, and let's hope my upcoming trip to the Red River Rivalry will be as good as advertised.
