College Football Wrap Up

It's been a really satisfying season overall, except of course for Pitt losing sooooo many games to end the season. That part is hard to swallow, but maybe it was a good thing the Panthers did not get to a bowl game because we probably would have ruined the Big East's perfect 5-0 bowl record.

Here then are my Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down for the 2006-07 bowl season:

Thumbs Up:

Florida: The Gators deserved the national title. One of the best shirts I ever saw was at a Big 33 Game in Hershey and it said..Size Hurts; Speed Kills. That was the UF-OSU game in a nutshell; the UF defensive ends combined for five sacks on Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith. Think about how good Florida will be when Urban Meyer gets a solid running game. It's scary.

Boise State: There could be a lot of bitching and moaning from the Boise folks but it is classy that the program is allowing its record to stand in place. Do ya think Dan Hawkins was lamenting the move to Colorado? The ending to the Fiesta Bowl was one of the greatest I have seen. There is no reason to think Boise will falter.

Penn State: Yes, Penn State. The defense kept the Nittany Lions in the game and provided the winning difference against a very frustrating Tennessee team. Penn State's bowl record is amazing.

LSU, Auburn, Georgia, USC and yes.Kentucky: These SEC teams helped propel the conference to a bowl season record of 6-3, which cements, at least until September, the argument that it is the best conference out there.

Big East: A conference record of 5-0 in bowl games, three teams (RU, WVU and UL) that can play with anyone and possibly a fourth, USF, make the "Big Least" jokes something used by people stuck in the past. If Pitt and Syracuse can get their games improved the conference is not just a hoops league.

USC: The Rose Bowl was Michigan's chance to show why it deserved a shot at Ohio State. Instead USC showed why it will be ranked #1 heading into next season. The Trojans were awesome, and I won a steak dinner off my cousin Jimbo. Speed off the corner killed Michigan in this one. Look for more running from USC next season.

Thumbs Down:

Ohio State: No, I am not trying to be a hater but man that was awful. Ohio State was supposed to be among the greatest teams of all-time. But then again so was USC last season and Oklahoma before that. Maybe I just oppose anointing teams BEFORE they actually close the deal. Ohio State is very good, but not great.There really are no great teams.chalk that up to the 85 scholarship limit, which is a good thing. And please, don't say how Ted Ginn Jr. would have changed things; it wouldn't have.

Big Ten: Again, I am not a "hater" but the Big Ten laid a HUGE egg this year in bowl games. If it wasn't for two terrific defenses, Wisconsin and PSU, the conference would have been shutout.

Big 12: Only Texas saved the conference from major embarrassment. The other "big boys", OU, Neb. & A&M, were kicked in the teeth. A bowl record of 3-5 is tempered by the teams they beat.all three victims had 6-6 records heading into the bowls. Texas needs a major rethink in the running game.

ACC: Only a Navy fumble saved the conference from its top-four teams going down in flames. Not a good showing from the top, but then again.FSU and UM won, so maybe the others should be worried a bit for next year.

Notre Dame: The defense is lousy. The offense was clobbered by the physical teams on the schedule. The comeback win over UCLA saved the regular season but also brought the smack-down from LSU. The Fighting Irish need to get a lot better.

Coaches: Yes, coaches, and I don't mean the old bar at Notre Dame; Coach Rod holding WVU hostage; Coach O'Brien heading from BC to NC State, Semper Fi coach. And of course Coach Petrino, I guess $25,000,000 over ten years at Louisville is not enough. Have fun with the coach-wrecker Michael Vick. And last but not least..Coach Satan.er, um, I mean Saban. This could be the perfect match, a completely unhinged fan base and a liar for a coach. In his grave Coach Bryant is spinning at 19,000 rpm.

I truly believe that if a coach leaves a school on his own to coach somewhere else the kids should be allowed to transfer with no penalty.

One of the most over-used phrases in football today is "buying into what the coach is saying", or something similar like "buying into the program". It is nauseating to hear because you know there are coaches out there who would bolt in a New York minute and leave the kids hanging. With that in mind I leave you all with this one quote from the writings of General George S. Patton:

"There is a great deal of talk about loyalty from the bottom to the top. Loyalty from the top down is even more necessary and much less prevalent."

So as we wrap up the season we look a bit at some of our teams and how they performed in the 2006 season.

Pitt: Great start, but lack of imagination on offense was magnified by an inability to run the ball when needed. Maybe that was the root of all the offensive problems. It better improve next season or things won't get better. Defensively the interior line still can't stop the run.

Penn State: Yes, they have the defense but the offense is still, for the most part, treading water. They take a big hit with the graduation of Tony Hunt and other big hits on defense. The key next season will be the offensive line because Morelli needs time to throw. The bowl win over UT will make Fred Lukac, Dirk Wentzel, Steve Sampsell & Brian McNally anticipate spring ball.

Auburn: A good season with missed opportunities. Wins over Florida and LSU were coupled with a muddling performance against Buffalo and losses to Arkansas and Georgia, a game which helped save the season for the Dawgs. Brandon Cox must play much better next season or Keith Hamrick will leave more games at halftime, like he did against UGA.

Navy: Great fun to watch. Paul Johnson is one of the top coaches in the country. The fumble against BC hurts a great deal now.but next year look for more of the same, a terrific program.

Boston College: A solid season, not spectacular. The coaching change will set them back a bit. Still can't root for them since they left the Big East.

Michigan State: The loss to Notre Dame doomed the season. What a Helter Skelter program. Hopefully for Pat Ghilani's sake the Spartans have found a coach that can steady the ship.

Notre Dame: The past three coaches at Notre Dame; Davie, Willingham and Weis are a combined 0-16 against top-10 opponents. That must, and will, change, but if I have to read one more story about Weis rubbing his chin to highlight his Super Bowl ring when he talks to a recruit I will hurl. The loss of Brady Quinn will hurt but more importantly the defense needs to improve greatly. Kevin McCloskey, Tony Watson & Fred Heidenreich will shake down the thunder next season.

UMass: A loss in the 1-AA championship game made Jim Degnim upset, but it was a nice season. That is really not a bad level of football. Jim Tressel won a lot at Youngstown St. and he would agree.

Va. Tech: My cousin Fritz married a Tech gal. The defense came around but the offense needs to get back to two-backs, not just one. The discipline problems have been a major issue.

Ohio State: How do you improve what was a great season? The answer is speed. The Hosses on the offensive line were embarrassed by Florida's speed. They will still be very good next season, on both sides of the ball. Good enough to win the Big Ten. But, I guess, they will have to play Wisconsin. Look for the offense to rely on running a lot early until the QB situation is figured out and then we'll have to hear Dave McNally once again tell us about the next "game of the century".

Texas: The eyes of Texas were on freshman Colt McCoy and after a rough start he turned into a very nice quarterback. The Longhorns must reestablish a take-no-prisoners defense. Gene Chizik must be replaced now that he is head man at Iowa State. Running the ball must be a priority.

Wake Forest: Our boys Matt Hartford and Pat McHenry had to be happy with the season. The Orange Bowl loss stings but the future is bright. The healthy offense next season will be interesting to watch. Wake needs to keep moving forward because FSU, UM, UNC and NC St. made major adjustments. Jim Grobe has a good thing going in the woods of Carolina!

Tennessee: We have mentioned before that Steve Petrosky's girlfriend is a UT grad. She can't be happy with what happened this year. It's been a long time since the Vols won the SEC. The offense needs to go back to hammering people; remember this.it was Tee Martin, not Peyton Manning, who quarterbacked the national championship team. Where is the hammer in the backfield?

Wisconsin: Cousin Mike Stobba was ecstatic about Wisconsin's defense against Arkansas in the bowl win; rightfully so because the Badgers did nothing on offense. Wisconsin lost to Michigan this year but Stobba wanted a shot at the Buckeyes and hey..why not? The future is very bright.

Duke: Thankfully the lacrosse case kept Duke football out of the news. That's good for J.R. Ambrose. Fortunately for J.R the lacrosse case is also keeping Duke basketball out of the news as well.

West Virginia: Offensively they are so much fun to watch. Defensively they are just short of a sharp stick in the eye. Coach Rod spurning Alabama was huge, just like Steve Slaton and Pat White in the same backfield. Defensive issues aside, WVU will be good for a while.

Florida State: We have no FSU grads on our list but thank God the offensive train wreck is over! Bobby Bowden got rid of his offensive coordinator. I wonder if he got a card for Christmas? New coordinator Jimbo Fisher should light a spark under the offense, especially the running game. Next year will be very interesting.

Georgia: Our gal Abi Wall is a diehard Bulldog fan..each of us has our crosses to bear! Seriously though, things looked a heckuva lot better at the end of the season than they did in September. With Matt Stafford entrenched at QB things should start better next season. The defense needs to get better, a lot better.

Michigan: Last year Michigan was just not good. This year Michigan fans complained about being ripped off from the re-match. Michigan is good and if Mike Hart is back the offense will be terrific. But the Wolverines must beat the good teams, and this year they did not.
